Here's Ivy cottage in the foreground, now sadly demolished, with our house, Jasmine Cottage in the back ground. Photo taken around 1890. Jasmine Cottage is believed to have been built in the late 1700's. Its been a farm, smithy, butchers, now artists complex, soon to house galleries, workshops, poetry venue and lots of new trees, bushes, shrubs, vegetables, including almond, cherry, apple, fig, apricot, blackberry, raspberry, strawberry and rhubarb.

Jasmine Cottage as the Piggyback School

It's said that a travelling man arranged to sleep one night in the hayloft over the pigsty and in the morning he told the farmer that he'd had a very good night's sleep. In fact he'd been so comfortable that he attempted to strike a bargain with the farmer. The travellor said to the farmer that if he let him stay in the barns then he'd teach the children of Chaddesden to read and write. The farmer agreed and Jasmine Cottage became known as "The Piggyback School." We hope to follow on the tradition by encouraging poetry, providing a venue and hosting poetry slams and spoken word festivals.
